The latest version of WhatsApp includes the security feature known as End-to-End Encryption. As WhatsApp deals with people, the security level of the information shared is considered as a top priority when it comes to instant messenger services.
When encryption is active, it saves your messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, status updates, and calls details from being placed in wrong hands.
The end-to-end encryption is activated by default when both the sender and recipient has the latest version of WhatsApp installed.
This feature ensures that only the sender and the receiver can read the messages, watch the videos, listen to audio notes and view the picture sent. No one else. Not even WhatsApp can access it. The security system is designed in such a way that every chat and text contain a lock code and a key. The unique key to open the message is available only in the receiver's device. All these are automatic and happens in no time.
What is "Verify Security Code" Screen in Contact Info Screen?
In order to verify that your calls and chats are encrypted, each and every chat has unique encryption code. You can find the code on your contact screen. It will be available in two formats. One as a QR code and other as a 60 digit number.
Open the chat screen and open the contact screen by tapping on the name of the contact. Now, tap on encryption to view the QR code and the 60 digit number.
If your contacts are next to you. Ask them to scan your screen QR code and they must get the 60 digit number and a green tick signal. This means that the message is encrypted and the correct person is reading it.
If the green tick signal does not appear, it indicates that the wrong QR code is scanned and the contact can not read that message as it is encrypted for a different user.
How to Send the QR Code and 60 Digit Code to SMS, Whatsapp or Email?
If you are using Android, iPhone or Windows phone, you can use the Share option from the QR code or 60 Digit number using SMS, Email, and other options.
I Have Latest Version of Whatsapp Installed. But, I a Seeing My Messages are not Encrypted. Why?
When you tap on the encryption in the contact info, you may receive a message stating the messages are not encrypted. It is because the receiver or someone in the group has not updated the to the latest version of WhatsApp. Once all the members are upgraded to latest WhatsApp version, a small notification will confirm that the messages are encrypted.
